DCC honors Perez and Nedd
The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) on Friday evening recognized two its own in Raymond Perez and Ashmead Nedd through an honorary ceremony for being selected on the West Indies under – 19 team set to participate in the 2018 ICC youth World Cup in New Zealand. The ceremony was held at the club’s home of Legends Pavilion.
The duo had stellar performances in the year’s regional under – tournament and forced their way into the Windies youth side for its title defence which beings in January.
Both youngsters earned most valuable players awards (MVP) with Nedd’s 27 scalps in the three-day version, earning his. He also took ten wickets in the one-dayers.
Perez on the other hand, stroked 348 runs inclusive of four fifties in the one day format to walk away with his MVP award. The righter hander also tallied 242 runs in the longer format.
Giving the youngsters their charger, Mark Harper, a former Windies under – 19 player himself who expressed the clubs elation and pointed the importance of using the tournament as a steppingstone in forging an international career.
Similarly, The man however who has worked tirelessly with both Nedd and Perez, coach Gavin Nedd, was visibly emotional when he took the podium to address the pair.
“I must say it’s a pleasure standing here this evening, not only to congregate you youngsters but to extend the joy that is within me, knowing over the years the support that I’ve been given not only from the club but from the parents because without them the energy level would not have been so high to complete the work that I’ve been doing at the club,” Nedd the father of Ashmead articulated.
Nedd went on to highlight Perez’s strides and wished his players well while also singling out first-class player Christopher Barnwell for also guiding Ashmead’s rise.
Former West Indies and Kenya’s coach Roger Harper, the first vice president of the club who also played for the Caribbean side at both the junior and senior level also extended words of wisdom to both young men at the ceremony.
DCC who was surprisingly not nominated for the club of the year at the recently held Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) awards has over the years been curing out youth players who went on to play at the West Indies youth level. Tevin Imlach and Keeom Paul played in the last youth World Cup while Trevon Griffith player in the one before. Rayon Thomas, Andrew Lyght senior, lallchand Persaud, Steve Massiah and Vishal Arjue were some other who came out the club system and went on to play for the West Indies at the youth level.
Young Sachin Singh also recently captained the Windies under – 16 team which toured England. Qumar Torrington a West Indies under -16 seamer also hails from the Queenstown club.
