Barnwell’s all-round brillance land G/town GCB 50 title
Christopher Barnwell following his heroics in the semifinals, earlier today, produced another brilliant showing to see Georgetown pass Essequibo by three wickets in the finals of the Guyana Cricket Board fifty overs finals played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Georgetown after winning the toss inserted Essequibo who after a wobbly start, managed to post 192 before being dismissed in the 39th over. Wicket-Keeper batsman Kemol Savory who led the revival posted 32 before being bowled by off-spinner Ramaal Lewis – the pick of Georgetown’s bowlers with figures of 3 – 34. Essequobo’s top score, however, came from Keemo Paul in an innings of 39 which included four fours and two sixes. Mark Williams was also in the runs with 33 as Barnwell, Devon Lord and Leon Johnson each claimed two wickets to support Lewis.
Georgetown, in response, saw Barnwell stroking a composed 69 at better than a run a ball to gift the City Side the 2017/18 title.His match winnings innings included seven fours and a maximum. Skipper Leon Johnson also contributed to the successful run chase with his knock of 47 while Shemroy Barrington posted 22.
Essequibo who harboured hopes of completing the double saw Ricardo Adams and Keemo Paul picking up two apiece as Georgetown ended on 193 – 7 in 44 overs to capture the title. Barnwell for his top performances walked away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Man of the Match awards.
